I’m not very knowledgeable when it comes to this, I know that LCD and Plasma have been out for a while now, as well as DLP. Just recently I saw one of those brand new LED Tvs.

So…which of these would be my ideal choice? I would use it much like anyone else would (gaming, watching blu-ray movies, HD programming, etc.)

Which of these offers the best overall picture quality? What are the strengths and weaknesses with each of these TVs?

Thanks!

In terms of picture quality…Plasma is the best!

Plasma TV’s = super high contrast ratios(2,000,000:1 dynamic; 40,000:1 native), giving you blackest blacks and more vivid and rich looking colors! Also have the fastest response times(.001ms) as well as fastest refresh rates(600hz), making them perfect for fast motion content like sports, movies & gaming. Currently…the only negative with today’s Plasma’s is energy consumption. On average uses the same as regular LCD’s but uses 40% more then LED LCD’s!

LED TV’s = high contrast ratios(3,000,000:1 dynamic; 15,000:1 native). Close to Plasma’s in pic quality(lower native contrast ratios)! However…response times(2ms) and refresh rates(240hz) still slower then Plasma’s! The main negative with LED LCD’s right now is cost! Very, very expensive compared to similar sized Plasma’s and LCD’s!

As for regular LCD’s, they tend to work ok for games as long as they have very fast response times! However, they generally do not come close to Plasma’s and LED’s in black levels or color saturation! They tend to have more ‘greyed’ blacks and washed out colors!

DLP’s on the other hand have very stunning pic qualities like LED’s and Plasma’s! However, they are very problematic and require new expensive lamps every couple thousand hours of use. Making them a bad long term investment!

Dollar for dollar…Plasma TV’s are the best performing HDTV out their right now! Great picture qualities for an affordable price! http://www.plasma-lcd-facts.co.uk/

i am thinking about buying a new tv for our living room, right now we have 32" lcd samsung tv. I am planning to move that to bed room and get a bigger one in living room may be 50+ inches. Any recommendations on what type and size screen should i prefer like LCD, plasma, dlp, lcd led or whatever the new trends are?

Wow…i’m wondering if ‘Gabriel’ has ever seen a Plasma TV in real life! Must be another LCD ‘fanboy’ that refuses to do research because they’re afraid to admit that a Plasma actually outperforms a LCD!

The newest plasma’s are some of the best performing ever made! They have the highest native contrast ratios(40,000:1), giving them the blackest blacks and more vivid and rich looking colors! They also have near instant response times(.001ms) and the fastest refresh rates(600hz), making them perfect for watching fast motion content like sports, movies & gaming! I highly recommend one for your living room!

As for the Plasma myths; they do not burn-in anymore, this problem has been eliminated with new technologies! And they do not use a ton more energy then similar sized LCD’s! They also last just as long as other HDTV’s! See the link below for more info and facts.

LED LCD’s come close to Plasma’s in picture quality but still suffer from LCD’s inherent flaw…response time! Their response times are still only 2ms at best! Not to mention how expensive LED LCD’s are!! Granted…sooner or later all TV’s will become LED TV’s simply because the technology is more energy efficient and that’s the road the world is taking. But for now, Plasma TV’s are an affordable and realistic investment no matter what LCD ‘fanboys’ want to think!

For brands of Plasma, stick to these three and nothing else; Pioneer, Panasonic or Samsung!

Make sure you’re set an auto mode for your resolution (default) to ensure you’re receiving 1080p resolution. This can be checked by pressing the info button on your remote.

Also avoid the vivid color setting under the picture options. This is often set as default and although it looks brilliant, the colors are not true to the picture and this setting will shorten the lifespan of the TV. If you’re in a dark room try the cinema mode or simply standard for the best looking colors.

Do you think around summer or fall these LED tv’s will significantly drop?
also is a edge lit LED better than a whole backlit ? I’m looking for colors
and great contrast’s for gaming and everything else.

an LED tv is an LED TV…they produce the same picture for the most part.

and i would assume once 3D TV’s really become popular the prices will start to drop…they have already come down some, but i would say around christmas they will be even cheaper.

From what I understand, it replaces the need for both lamps and a colorwheel, which reduces the overall sound the set makes and eliminates the need for lamp replacements as the TV ages.

Is this too good to be true? What are the downsides, if any?
Those are good to know, thanks! I’m looking specifically into LED ones though, so there will never be a lamp replacement required. All those bits of information are helpful still!

The main downside is that these LEDs are not very bright.
In general, rear-projection TVs have a much better picture in a dark room. Off-angle viewing is not that great either.
These days, plasma and new 10-bit LCDs can display usually more colors than 8-bit DLPs.

In general, DLP LED rear-projection TVs are very close in price range with Plasma, and I would buy a plasma if I could afford the difference.
