Sharp has launched it latest ranges of Backlight LED TVs that are green in the power department without compromising on picture quality.

I dont get it, these new LED tv’s. They are not really LED composed tv’s are they? Just LCD tv’s with led backlights? Isnt that what they are?
Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD) use a backlight to shine through crystals that allow or restrict the passage of light. Each pixel is composed of 3 crystals with filters for the three primary colors.
Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) displays directly produce each of the three primary colors. No need for backlight or filters.
A different thing is LED-backlit LCD, where LEDs are use as backlight instead of fluorescent light.

Philips to unveil 42-inch full HD LCD with LED backlight
Philips unveiled a 42-inch full HD LCD display with new LED backlight at IFA 2008 held on Aug 29 to Sep 3 in Berlin, Germany.
This revolutionary new LED lights are used in a grid as backlight for the LCD display creating an image with deepest black alongside maximum output and color in bright areas.

Lite-On LED backlight LCD TV display gives 40% power savings
Lite-On show off the LCD which is only 1cm thick @ LED Lighting Taiwan 2009 Expo. The package is called 50/30, and the small units are 5.6mm wide and 3mm high, and has 228 LED’s to make the whole backlight. This means that there is a drastic drop in the power consumption to between 120-200W giving roughly 40% power savings. This LED screen is already in mass production to be included in new products. Look out for the notebooks with this nifty battery saving monitor over Christmas.
